Dragon in Winter (HOTD 3x07)

Dragon in Winter (HOTD 3x07)

In this episode, Liz discusses House of the Dragon 3x07 titled "Dragon in Winter." As the season has just one episode left, there's a lot more set up. Aemond has a mind trip just like his uncle Daemon the previous season. Alys Rivers weaves her web on him. Alicent apparently just does whatever Rhaenyra tells her and she has given up on most of her children. Helaena has some interesting dreams, but does it mean. We get a sort of resolution with Rhaena's storyline. Ormund continues his plots with an unexpected ally appearing at the very end. Check out the website to share your thoughts of this episode!

01:05 --> 01:06 [SPEAKER_00]: My name is Liz.
01:06 --> 01:08 [SPEAKER_00]: If you're new to this podcast, welcome.
01:09 --> 01:11 [SPEAKER_00]: I hope you enjoy this journey of all things Westeros.
01:12 --> 01:19 [SPEAKER_00]: And in this episode, I'll be talking about House of the Dragon episode titled The Dragon in Winter.
01:20 --> 01:31 [SPEAKER_00]: Well, everyone, we are on the second to last episode of Season 3 of House of the Dragon with just one more episode left.
01:31 --> 01:39 [SPEAKER_00]: There's certainly plenty of storyline left to cover, but yeah, this has been a very interesting season.
01:40 --> 01:55 [SPEAKER_00]: You could argue that it's a better season compared to number two, though simultaneously you could make the case that this is a season that overall got a chair of problems just like the previous two seasons have.
01:56 --> 02:01 [SPEAKER_00]: There are a few things to talk about in this episode, so I will get cracking.
02:09 --> 02:19 [SPEAKER_00]: Helena, we get to see her having her dreams, which are pretty interesting choices of what to include in those dreams.
02:20 --> 02:31 [SPEAKER_00]: I will say that one thing I am very happy about, and I'm sure a number of book readers are also pretty happy about, is that we got a glimpse of Helena on dream fire.
02:32 --> 03:00 [SPEAKER_00]: And they even mention, again, that Dream Fire is her dragon, which is something that I know, frankly, really annoyed a lot of book readers, that this entire time we never saw her on Dream Fire, which is a little silly to those of us who are familiar with the lore, because it does get mentioned that she used to ride Dream Fire quite a bit before events happened.
03:01 --> 03:16 [SPEAKER_00]: they seem to indicate in the after-credit behind the scenes feature that the use of dreams in this episode was intended to reflect the desires of some of the characters in the show which
03:17 --> 03:42 [SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty interesting because this connects back to a previous episode where I was basically criticizing the show and I think it's a fair criticism of how the writing team really seems to love using Freudian concepts in their writing choices for the show because it's just a lot of what the hell is this really?
03:43 --> 04:02 [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not the only person who has criticized writing decisions on the show about this because it's like there's just a lot of people have been commenting about how the writing team seems a little too interested in
04:03 --> 04:24 [SPEAKER_00]: having characters on the show being subconsciously maybe sexually attracted is not really the right term but they have a weird complex about their moms in particular Damon with his mom back in the second season which is also very strange because he even says it in this episode that
04:29 --> 04:43 [SPEAKER_00]: His connection with his mom wouldn't be particularly that strong because at the three years old you're not going to remember as much about somebody when they're gone from your life at that age.
04:43 --> 04:50 [SPEAKER_00]: So it just makes the whole season who thing really, even more strange and non-sensical.
04:50 --> 04:59 [SPEAKER_00]: And then this is like the second time you had Aim and have a weird thing with Allison and then it turns out in this episode, it's actually not really Allison.
04:59 --> 05:07 [SPEAKER_00]: It was really him having some weird dream delusion thing happening where it's actually Alice.
05:07 --> 05:10 [SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, I was getting off track, so let me circle back to Helena.
05:10 --> 05:10 [SPEAKER_00]: So
05:11 --> 05:17 [SPEAKER_00]: Helena, again, ends up being in a situation where she doesn't have a lot of control over what's happening to her.
05:18 --> 05:21 [SPEAKER_00]: And she has her fears and concerns via the dreams.
05:22 --> 05:26 [SPEAKER_00]: And it's interesting that they also include a winter.
05:27 --> 05:46 [SPEAKER_00]: vision, although considering what they did with the whole winter imagery and game of thrones, it's very possible that yes, it could be winter as in hinting back towards the whole long winter, long night concept that comes up later in the timeline via game of thrones.
05:47 --> 06:07 [SPEAKER_00]: But it also could actually be a reference to ashes, but we will have to wait and see if either of my theories, quote unquote, about that actually gets anywhere who knows it could just be just a weird vision, visual choice at the writing team decided on.
06:07 --> 06:07 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
06:08 --> 06:09 [SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see.
06:09 --> 06:15 [SPEAKER_00]: So we see a further development of the relationship between aim and men's Alice.
06:15 --> 06:27 [SPEAKER_00]: And it's interesting that yes, Alice does finally get to Heron Hall, which of course brings up criticisms about how this show also does a lot of teleporting again, but whatever.
06:28 --> 06:29 [SPEAKER_00]: That's not the point.
06:29 --> 06:37 [SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so we get a new tension going on between Amin, Alice, and Allison.
06:38 --> 06:53 [SPEAKER_00]: Which again connects to their choice of making this all Freudian and Amin having a weird complex about his mom and not having enough love from her versus her and Aegon, etc.
06:54 --> 07:09 [SPEAKER_00]: And it's pretty funny because this also links up to your stereotypical tension of a guy, dealing with his mother and his spouse slash life partner.
07:10 --> 07:19 [SPEAKER_00]: And you have that tension also where it's pretty clear that Alice is very interested in potentially getting a lot of gain out of
07:24 --> 07:50 [SPEAKER_00]: and longer term bond slash relationship is in a strong position to completely disrupt this developing connection that she has with Amand and it's pretty interesting that the situation is in a position where yes, she is very skeptical of Allison because Allison is a threat
07:52 --> 08:16 [SPEAKER_00]: But then, as it turns out, Allison is genuinely a threat to aim, and because she tries to poison her son, which as a side note, this whole thing of Allison seemingly going out of her way to screw over her own kids really does make her behavior in season one just completely absurd.
08:16 --> 08:17 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like...
08:17 --> 08:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Suddenly, Allison has decided that I am just going to throw my kids under the bus more or less to, I don't even know why.
08:26 --> 08:43 [SPEAKER_00]: At this point, she is fixated on protecting Helena, which to a certain degree, I kind of get why she was protecting Helena, but she's kind of going about it in a way where she's basically allowing her sons to get killed if not attempt to kill them herself.
08:44 --> 08:55 [SPEAKER_00]: to protect her daughter and her granddaughter, which is a very strange 180 because we saw back in the first season.
08:56 --> 09:04 [SPEAKER_00]: She was prepared to potentially kill Reneera over Luke slashing, Aiman, and then Aiman losing one of his eyes.
09:05 --> 09:11 [SPEAKER_00]: And yet the same character is now prepared to kill that son that she tried to defend.
09:12 --> 09:18 [SPEAKER_00]: And she has apparently zero issues with letting Aegon be killed off or anything.
09:19 --> 09:34 [SPEAKER_00]: it's just very strange the whole way they choose to portray her in this season and also the previous season it's just very strange and very inconsistent and I just don't know what the deal is with the writing team on that one.
09:35 --> 09:54 [SPEAKER_00]: what happens to Allison at this point who the hell knows anymore because she's basically stuck at Heron Hall without anybody to offer her protection because the one and only guard that was apparently with her which is also very strange gets killed off and now what is she supposed to do?
09:54 --> 09:57 [SPEAKER_00]: She can't travel back to King's Landing alone.
09:58 --> 10:05 [SPEAKER_00]: because God only knows what could happen to her along the way, even if she does go back to King's Landing.
10:05 --> 10:10 [SPEAKER_00]: So that is going to be a very interesting thing to see what happens with that.
10:10 --> 10:21 [SPEAKER_00]: As you could probably guess, there are just things that happen in this episode where I just want to throw my hands and just be like, I'm fed up with this with all these writing decisions.
10:21 --> 10:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I try to find the positive about writing decisions on the show, but there are times where even I can't really defend some things about it, but that's neither here nor there.
10:34 --> 10:39 [SPEAKER_00]: We see that the army of the rivermen and northmen finally show up at Tumbledon.
10:39 --> 10:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, that's one of the very few chess pieces on the board that actually makes a lot of sense to me.
10:47 --> 11:01 [SPEAKER_00]: It definitely makes way more sense, and it is a more realistic depiction of how it does take time for this large army to go from the riverlands down into the reach where Tumbledon is.
11:02 --> 11:12 [SPEAKER_00]: It's not 100% clearly stated exactly where the army was when they were given the orders to go south.
11:13 --> 11:22 [SPEAKER_00]: But presumably they were within a close distance to Heron Hall, because as we saw back in the second episode,
11:30 --> 11:46 [SPEAKER_00]: about what happened to Jason, the Gullet, and then he tells the rivermen and the winter wolves to head south, initially to go to the capital, but then they get diverted to tumble tin, which they finally get there in this episode.
11:47 --> 11:51 [SPEAKER_00]: or close enough to the city that they will actually show up in the next episode.
11:51 --> 11:53 [SPEAKER_00]: So that it makes perfect sense.
11:53 --> 11:54 [SPEAKER_00]: It would take time.
11:54 --> 12:05 [SPEAKER_00]: Which is why there's a fair criticism about how the hell is it that Allison gets sent off to Heron Hall in the previous episode and then she shows up in this episode.
12:07 --> 12:22 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a little disappointing that they didn't have the battle of Tumbledon in this episode, but as the preview indicates, we are finally going to get it in the next episode, and that's going to be interesting.
12:23 --> 12:34 [SPEAKER_00]: because I know a lot of book readers, including myself, were initially hoping that they were going to do the two battles of Tumbledon because that was what happened in the book.
12:35 --> 12:38 [SPEAKER_00]: There were two battles, but it looks like
12:39 --> 12:43 [SPEAKER_00]: for the purposes of pacing.
12:44 --> 12:51 [SPEAKER_00]: And I guess due to budgetary considerations, they've decided to, in essence, combine the two battles.
12:52 --> 12:59 [SPEAKER_00]: That seems to be the direction they're going with, which would make some sense.
13:00 --> 13:10 [SPEAKER_00]: I just hope that the battle will be properly done, and I will be curious to see if it's going to be an extra long episode or not.
13:11 --> 13:12 [SPEAKER_00]: We will have to see.
13:13 --> 13:27 [SPEAKER_00]: And we get a sort of resolution to the whole Raina storyline, which if you have been listening to the episodes this whole season of the podcast, you know that I am not a fan of the Raina storyline.
13:27 --> 13:27 [SPEAKER_00]: I am
13:28 --> 13:37 [SPEAKER_00]: actually started out as being a wait and see approach because that is generally my approach with these adaptations.
13:37 --> 13:53 [SPEAKER_00]: I just wait and see before I make a conclusion or I make a final personal opinion about how good or how bad the writing choices are and I have to say rain a storyline is one of those
13:56 --> 14:08 [SPEAKER_00]: I was prepared to accept it, but then through all these episodes, the direction they went with, it's honestly ridiculous.
14:08 --> 14:15 [SPEAKER_00]: As I've said in previous episodes, in some respects, I understand the decision of why they...
14:16 --> 14:32 [SPEAKER_00]: had combined the two characters of rena and metals because it does give the character rena a lot more to do, but then it also creates a lot of plot holes which granted a lot of casual
14:33 --> 14:38 [SPEAKER_00]: audiences probably wouldn't know or care or think about it.
14:39 --> 14:45 [SPEAKER_00]: But for people who are way more familiar with the books and the lore, it's really frustrating.
14:45 --> 14:55 [SPEAKER_00]: And the way it gets resolved in this episode, it just ends up turning this whole conflict and tension, in connection to Raina
15:00 --> 15:08 [SPEAKER_00]: It just made the whole situation feel like why don't you people ever talk to each other for crying out loud.
15:09 --> 15:21 [SPEAKER_00]: Reneera would have been annoyed and angry, but she wouldn't have been so angry to the point where she would actually harm Reina over this.
15:23 --> 15:32 [SPEAKER_00]: She would have been understandably pissed off, but she wouldn't have treated Reina in a life-threatening way or anything.
15:32 --> 15:42 [SPEAKER_00]: I guess the best metaphor would be like, if you were a kid, you played with a ball in the house.
15:42 --> 15:48 [SPEAKER_00]: Even though your mom told you 500 times already, you are not supposed to be throwing
15:51 --> 16:08 [SPEAKER_00]: You do it anyway, and you smashed an heirloom, and now you're like, oh my god, mom and dad are going to kill me because I smashed up this family heirloom By throwing around a ball after they told me not to do it 500 times.
16:09 --> 16:10 [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to kill me
16:11 --> 16:18 [SPEAKER_00]: And then, eventually, they find out you did it, and yes, they yelled the hell out of you.
16:19 --> 16:22 [SPEAKER_00]: They sent you to your room and grounded you for a week.
16:22 --> 16:26 [SPEAKER_00]: So you can't play video games or your computer or whatever for a whole week.
16:27 --> 16:34 [SPEAKER_00]: but ultimately they forgive you and you move on with your life.
16:34 --> 16:42 [SPEAKER_00]: That's basically what it is with rain a storyline and it's like what did this ultimately achieve?
16:42 --> 16:56 [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it created tension between Reneera and Damon, but at the same time, as we saw in this episode, she ultimately does understand why he lied to her.
16:56 --> 16:59 [SPEAKER_00]: She's pissed off about the fact he lied to her.
17:00 --> 17:14 [SPEAKER_00]: And yet, she can't be completely angry at it because he was put in a situation where he was stuck between his wife and his daughter, and as a parent herself,
17:16 --> 17:32 [SPEAKER_00]: She recognizes that what would she end up doing if she was also put in a position where if the roles were reversed what if her sons did something to piss off Damon what would she end up doing
17:32 --> 17:47 [SPEAKER_00]: So it just feels like there is tension between the two of them and yet it's not a level of tension that would cause a huge level of chaos in their household, the way that it was in the book which it did.
17:47 --> 17:50 [SPEAKER_00]: It caused a lot of tension because again,
17:51 --> 17:54 [SPEAKER_00]: her being upset at Damon is not because of Reina.
17:54 --> 18:08 [SPEAKER_00]: It's over a completely separate character, Nettles, who is someone who has no direct connection to their family and therefore you could make the argument that she has every right to be angry about Nettles.
18:08 --> 18:13 [SPEAKER_00]: And she was also pissed off about Nettles for a whole other reason that has nothing to do with Chase.
18:13 --> 18:15 [SPEAKER_00]: But if you're interested in that,
18:21 --> 18:27 [SPEAKER_00]: to listen to my discussions of that because I just don't feel like repeating myself here.
18:41 --> 18:57 [SPEAKER_00]: It is like a connection to the whole rena thing because what partially led up to Reneera even figuring out and discovering that sheep stealer still has a rider is the situation between Bala and Adam.
18:57 --> 19:09 [SPEAKER_00]: We get that little scene where Adam is hoping that Bala would help convince Reneera to legitimize him and his brother
19:10 --> 19:19 [SPEAKER_00]: It does seem like there's hints that both brothers like Bala, which is interesting decision that they decide to do.
19:19 --> 19:22 [SPEAKER_00]: They're creating almost another love triangle thing.
19:22 --> 19:25 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what the writing team is doing.
19:26 --> 19:30 [SPEAKER_00]: They're interesting, creating all these love triangles in this episode.
19:30 --> 19:31 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
19:32 --> 19:43 [SPEAKER_00]: although now Adam seems to get the hint that his brother also likes baila and she seems to be interested in Allen.
19:45 --> 19:59 [SPEAKER_00]: So Adam is probably going to be a good guy and not try to do anything about it because he does very much care about his brother and he is a good guy.
20:00 --> 20:02 [SPEAKER_00]: I have to say I do like Adam.
20:02 --> 20:04 [SPEAKER_00]: I liked Adam a lot in the book.
20:04 --> 20:07 [SPEAKER_00]: He's just one of those characters that I ultimately ended up liking.
20:09 --> 20:13 [SPEAKER_00]: And I imagine that quite a few of you listening to this also like the character as well.
20:14 --> 20:23 [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, let's offer some good things to come his way since he may not end up with Bala after all.
20:23 --> 20:24 [SPEAKER_00]: But that's all I'm going to say about that.
20:25 --> 20:48 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so we also got a couple of scenes involving Coralists, where, of course, as we saw at the end of the previous episode, he got kidnapped and not surprisingly, he is now with Ormond as a hostage against Reneera, which, okay, this is a huge difference from the book and honestly, it's just a weird.
20:50 --> 21:11 [SPEAKER_00]: choice, it's a really strange choice of what Mormon is doing because ultimately, as going points out in the episode, them holding Coralis hostage, what is that even going to really achieve because that doesn't prevent the huge army from coming to tumble
21:14 --> 21:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I suppose the argument is that it's meant to be another trump card to prevent her army from completely destroying them, especially using dragons, but it does it really do much to stop them.
21:34 --> 21:38 [SPEAKER_00]: She is going to have her army attack, tumbleton, one way or another.
21:38 --> 22:01 [SPEAKER_00]: But as we find out though, he ultimately doesn't care whether or not correlates ends up getting killed, it's meant to be a delayed tactic, because his Trump card is that he is going to have off betray Reneera and become another dragon rider on his side.
22:02 --> 22:24 [SPEAKER_00]: Which incidentally is actually something that happened in the book, which again, I discussed this in the second season of the podcast, and I have this suspicion that The reason why they decided to write the battles of Tumbledin down to one battle of Tumbledin
22:25 --> 22:34 [SPEAKER_00]: It's also because the way the two battles turned out in the book is really terrible.
22:36 --> 22:46 [SPEAKER_00]: And as I mentioned in another episode, absolutely nobody comes out looking like a hero or a good guy in
22:52 --> 23:19 [SPEAKER_00]: involved in both battles of Tumbleton, was not that bad of a person, I'm not going to lie, but I already discussed it in the second season of this podcast, and I have zero interest in hearing about people listening to this episode and the next episode complaining about this, about me spoiling stuff that I already talked about in an earlier season anyway.
23:20 --> 23:30 [SPEAKER_00]: And as a side note, even when I discussed both battles, I did skip and gloss over some of the really disturbing things that happened.
23:31 --> 23:41 [SPEAKER_00]: If you're really curious, you could also look it up yourself at a later point about what happened in tumble tin via the bookfire and blood because it was pretty disturbing.
23:41 --> 23:42 [SPEAKER_00]: Some of the behavior.
23:43 --> 23:53 [SPEAKER_00]: Let's just say that a lot of war crimes happened that is pretty gross and I just don't feel comfortable discussing into which detail about that anyway.
23:54 --> 24:03 [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, so I guess I will close out this episode with just two more things that I feel like are really worth.
24:05 --> 24:06 [SPEAKER_00]: spending more time on.
24:06 --> 24:10 [SPEAKER_00]: We have the storyline with Messiah.
24:11 --> 24:26 [SPEAKER_00]: And it's pointed out in another scene that it seems like Messiah is enjoying the whole connection to power and the throne a little too much at this point.
24:27 --> 24:46 [SPEAKER_00]: given that she is always at the small council meetings, even though she's supposed to be the mistress of whispers, and she's trying to give Reneer all this advice that has nothing to do with her responsibility.
24:47 --> 24:53 [SPEAKER_00]: And Reneer, I even points this out in their little scene towards the end of the
24:54 --> 25:17 [SPEAKER_00]: But then ultimately, Reneera ends up needing reassurance from Missaria that she's doing the right thing that her goals are not wrong and they end up having a fling you could call it or you can call it the start of a love affair if you want to think of it that way as well.
25:18 --> 25:19 [SPEAKER_00]: I just have to say that.
25:20 --> 25:25 [SPEAKER_00]: I will always find this dynamic between the two of them like this very strange.
25:26 --> 25:43 [SPEAKER_00]: Now granted, you could make the argument that fire and blood is just very vague about it and is not going to discuss any potential romantic or sexual relationships between characters who are not
25:44 --> 26:09 [SPEAKER_00]: officially couples okay but I agree with a lot of other people who criticize their relationship because it does feel like they just wrote a lesbian queer relationship into the narrative for no other real reason other than to create a queer relationship.
26:10 --> 26:15 [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I absolutely have zero issues with queer relationships.
26:16 --> 26:17 [SPEAKER_00]: I am perfectly fine with them.
26:18 --> 26:23 [SPEAKER_00]: Just like I would be fine with your typical heterosexual relationship as well.
26:24 --> 26:27 [SPEAKER_00]: I have no particular issues in general.
26:28 --> 26:41 [SPEAKER_00]: I just feel like any romantic or sexual relationship if you want to go that route, but any of these types of relationships being included in storylines have to serve a narrative purpose.
26:41 --> 26:49 [SPEAKER_00]: It makes a lot of sense that relationships between certain characters will progress in that direction.
26:50 --> 26:55 [SPEAKER_00]: It should make sense when you introduce that as a story element.
26:56 --> 27:10 [SPEAKER_00]: When it doesn't make any narrative sense, and when it doesn't really add anything to the narrative, it just feels like you're just adding it in there just because at this point.
27:24 --> 27:27 [SPEAKER_00]: I am not going to be the one to say, that's what it is.
27:27 --> 27:36 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to be like, I think that snarky criticism is not completely wrong.
27:36 --> 27:39 [SPEAKER_00]: It could honestly be a self-insert thing that she's doing.
27:40 --> 27:50 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know at this point because some of the writing decisions that have happened, not in just this season, but in the other seasons, have been very questionable as well.
27:51 --> 28:06 [SPEAKER_00]: But to close at this episode, I will talk about Egon, and yeah, I basically knew that Sunfire was not dead because of certain events that happened later in the book.
28:06 --> 28:22 [SPEAKER_00]: which I am going to presume they will include in season four of the TV show as well because if they don't include it then they are terrible writers.
28:23 --> 28:25 [SPEAKER_00]: It is a really important event.
28:26 --> 28:41 [SPEAKER_00]: that happens later involving Egon and Sunfire, so that's why I knew that Sunfire was not actually dead because if that dragon was actually dead, I would be like, what the hell are you people even doing in the writers room at this point?
28:42 --> 28:45 [SPEAKER_00]: why are you even writing for this show?
28:46 --> 28:50 [SPEAKER_00]: You should just not be the show runner writing team at this point.
28:50 --> 29:05 [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, so they confirm that Sunfire is actually still alive and it is also interesting that they kept the detail that Sunfire is severely injured and disfigured.
29:06 --> 29:06 [SPEAKER_00]: That is exactly what
29:12 --> 29:40 [SPEAKER_00]: And it does act as a really interesting parallel to Reneera because you have two claimants to the throne, to rival rulers who are hoping and believing that divine intervention is the reason why they are the chosen one, the person who is supposed to be on the higher throne and ruling Westeros.
29:40 --> 30:05 [SPEAKER_00]: we shall see what Aegon chooses to do next now that he has his dragon back because as you can guess this is not the end of his storyline either so anyway this has been another very long reaction episode i will apologize if i sounded a little bit too rambly and ranty in this episode but
